Band Biography

• Early Beginnings: Born in Houston, Texas, Carolyn grew up in a musical household and picked up her mother’s guitar at an early age. She began performing professionally at 15 and initially fronted the Houston band The Imperial Monkeys in the early 1990s.
• The Austin Scene: She later moved to Austin, Texas—the “Live Music Capital of the World”—where she faced initial hardships, including living out of her van, while establishing herself in the local music community. Her powerful vocals have frequently drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin, while her fierce guitar work is often likened to Stevie Ray Vaughan.
• Breakthrough and John Mayall: Her national breakthrough came with her 2008 album Miss Understood. In 2018, she achieved historical blues milestones by joining legendary British bluesman John Mayall’s band, becoming the first female lead guitarist in the history of the Bluesbreakers.
• Alligator Records & Recent Success: Wonderland signed with the prestigious Alligator Records catalog as their first-ever female guitar hero. Her subsequent albums, Tempting Fate and Truth Is, were produced by roots-rock icon Dave Alvin. She has been inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame and regularly tours worldwide with her core rhythm section, featuring Cole El-Saleh on keyboards and Kevin Lance on drums.
• Instrumental Talents: Beyond her signature forceful electric guitar and lap steel playing, she is a multi-instrumentalist who plays trumpet, accordion, piano, and mandolin, and is noted for her distinct ability to whistle on key during live solos.
